During a notable rebuke, Big 12 chief declared that Notre Dame athletic director, Pete Bevacqua, was “entirely out of bounds” for his comments concerning the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
Notre Dame maintains a football scheduling alliance with the ACC and is a participating member in other sports. The AD has argued that the ACC hurt Notre Dame’s chances to enter the College Football Playoff, instead pushing for the inclusion of the University of Miami.
“They do great things for Notre Dame, but we provide substantial football value to the ACC, and we didn’t understand why you would make an effort to try to hurt us in this process,” Bevacqua remarked.
Miami ultimately received the CFP invitation over Notre Dame, largely due to securing the head-to-head meeting between the two teams. Notre Dame's AD additionally stated that the ACC engaged in a coordinated social media effort over multiple weeks showing its preference for Miami.
Later on Tuesday, the Big 12 commissioner responded to the criticism at the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.
“In my view his conduct has been egregious,” Yormark stated. “He is completely out of bounds in his method and if he was in the same room, I’d say to him the same thing.”
The criticism is especially striking given Bevacqua’s prominent role. He sits on the College Football Playoff Management Committee with the ten FBS conference commissioners, advocating for the concerns of football independent Notre Dame.
Yormark also remarked the assistance the ACC provided Notre Dame during the pandemic-disrupted 2020 season, providing the Irish a full conference schedule and a berth in its championship game.
“His behavior has been egregious,” Yormark said again. “It’s been unacceptable going after the ACC commissioner, when they helped Notre Dame during Covid...”
Speculation had circulated about Notre Dame possibly splitting with the ACC and aligning with the Big 12. However, Yormark's public reprimand on Tuesday appear to make such a move less likely in the near term.
Notre Dame, who reached the CFP final last season, have announced they will decline a bowl game after missing out this year.
