One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a collection of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
He stated in a statement that he was "grateful for the chance to have participated, excited about the promise of the organization, and eagerly await observing their progress".
The former Harvard president, who formerly presided over the Ivy League institution, stated on Monday that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.
The recently released emails revealed that the official corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 detention for alleged sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the technology organization expressed it respected the economist's determination to step down.
"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the insight he provided to the directors," OpenAI commented.
This news follows after the two houses of Congress agreed on this week to endorse a legislation that would compel the Department of Justice to disclose its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The bill will then head to the office of President Trump for approval. He has stated he expects to sign the measure, after changing his position on the issue following pressure from his supporters.
A group of Epstein-connected correspondence released by the Congressional committee recently referenced several high-profile figures in the Epstein's previous network, without indicating any illegal behavior by those people.
The communications indicated that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often trying to introduce the academic to prominent world leaders.
After the messages were made available with the wider community, Summers expressed he took "complete accountability for my misguided choice to persist in interacting with the financier".
He further stated that he wanted "to restore trust and mend relationships with the people closest to me".
Summers occupied senior posts under two Democratic presidents; acting as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He presided over Harvard from the early 2000s and is still a professor there. When stating his departure from public duties previously on this week, he said he would persist with his teaching commitments.
Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the policy organization, a liberal policy institute in DC where Summers was a senior fellow, verified that the economist was not affiliated with the organization.
He entered the directorate of the technology firm, which creates ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its top executive Sam Altman.
