Saved from Ukraine Lioness Undergoes Essential Dental Operation
The Big Cat Sanctuary
A three-year-old lioness saved from conflict-ridden Ukraine has undergone critical dental surgery to remove a badly decayed fang resulting from an infection.
Lira was brought to a wildlife sanctuary in Kent, England on 14 March following a campaign by managing director Cam Whitnall, who collected £500,000 to support her and four other rescued lions.

The procedure was carried out on last week by dentist an experienced animal dentist, who has cared for hundreds of large felines.
"When I examined Lira's jaw and mouth, I could see immediately the broken tooth was severely infected," stated Mr Kertesz.
He believed the infection was due to a injury sustained more than a year ago, leading to germs producing harmful substances inside the tooth.
"The approach I follow is non-human dental problems need to be treated in the safest, the most conservative and most secure manner," he said.
Mr Kertesz clarified that as Lira did not need to hunt for food, removal was the most "sensible and ethical solution."
The Animal Rescue Facility
The rescue center reported the removed fang was 3.14 inches in length, with the dentist having to extract a pocket of pus from under the fang and seal the significant opening with seven dissolving sutures.
He also performed a dental procedure on the opposing upper canine tooth, which was also found to be infected.
The curator, curator at the facility, declared the procedure was a "complete success."
She noted the team had observed "a minor swelling on Lira's jawline" but it had been difficult to assess "the extent of the problem."
"Lira will be a little uncomfortable to initially, but now that the infectious materials are out of her body, she will begin improving over the next few days," added Ms Smith.
The successful surgery marks a major milestone in Lira's recovery after her rescue from Ukraine.
